In Eltham, known as Nillumbik for thousands of years, meaning shallow roots / shallow earth. On the lands of the Wurundjeri-willam Custodians of the Kulin Nation.
Eltham is known for leafy sidewalks, but the walk to Sweeneys Flats from Griffith Park is another type of gem. The hidden trail takes you from urban edges into open bushland, along the Birrarung (Yarra) river, past ancient river redgums and mossy winding paths. It feels a world away from the city.
One of my favourite parts about the walk between Sweeney's flats and Griffith Park is how each landscape folds into the next. If you start at Sweeney's lane, the environment is open, grassy bushland. Take the twisting path along the river and suddenly the foliage folds in on you, becoming dark and moist. Little birds dance along branches. The river disappears. You can bend to glimpse patches of wetlands, that suddenly open in their own private vista. It feels like a journey, one that evolves constantly, surprising you with each moment.
Go on your own with a camera, wander with a friend, head down at dusk for a glimpse of one of the local owls. The walk can be taken from either Griffith Park entrance, or Sweeneys Lane.
